Final Approval for St. Clair Expansion

St. Clair Hospital’s six-story, 280,000-square-foot outpatient center, shown in the architect’s rendering, should be completed in two years. The $142 million project will result in the realignment of the intersection of North Wren Drive, Bower Hill Road and Firwood Drive, making the area safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Patients used to walking through the maze of St. Clair Hospital to get outpatient tests will see a streamlined process thanks to a new 280,000-square-foot, six-story outpatient center, the hallmark of the hospital’s $142 million renovation of its Bower Hill Road campus, expected to be completed by fall of 2020.

In addition to the outpatient center, the project will realign the intersection of North Wren Drive, Bower Hill Road and Firwood Drive, to make walking and driving in the area safer.

St. Clair’s expansion includes the addition of a new 300-space employee parking garage, completed this spring, and a separate utility building to be constructed this fall.

The outpatient center will have underground parking and feature suites for surgery, physical and occupational therapy, a pharmacy, lab, imaging, endoscopy, cardiodiagnostics, infusion, a café, outdoor promenade and doctors’ offices in such specialties as heart and vascular, ophthalmology, urology and orthopedics. Patients will relax in privacy in 51 pre- and post-procedure rooms, with space for family to wait. It will be connected to the main hospital on two floors.

Driving the project is the hospital’s exponential growth. Since it was constructed in 1954, the hospital has had frequent expansions. Its outpatient volume has jumped 130 percent since 2006, according to president and chief executive officer James M. Collins. The project will be the eighth largest building project in the region.

St. Clair, which is part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, takes all major insurance, providing access to 500,000 residents in the 38-community area it serves.

St. Clair is Mt. Lebanon’s largest employer, with more than 2,500 employees and 600 physicians. The project is expected to add 150 new jobs and contribute $262.4 million in direct revenue to the region’s economy. It is the region’s fastest growing hospital, with an increase in market share from 19 percent in 2006 to 24.4 percent in 2016.
