La Vera Brooklyn Pizzeria opening in Uptown

Richie Sphatt is bringing a slice of his Brooklyn roots to Mt. Lebanon with La Vera Brooklyn Pizzeria, opening this month at 656 Washington Road in the former Badamo’s Pizza space.

Sphatt, who grew up in Brooklyn and spent a decade in the Pittsburgh restaurant industry, said the goal is to recreate the neighborhood pizzerias of his childhood.

“When people come in, I want them to feel like they’re walking down 86th Street in South Brooklyn,” Sphatt said. “We’re going to use nothing but the best stuff — organic flour, San Marzano tomatoes and cheese that is from the East Coast.”

The shop will emphasize slices, a hallmark of New York pizzerias. Customers can expect a rotating case filled with classics like pepperoni and sausage alongside daily specials with imported meats and fresh toppings. Calzones, sandwiches and salads will round out the menu.

Sphatt and his father, Richard, are opening the pizzeria together, drawing on Richard’s longtime experience as a chef. Crystal Ondike, Sphatt’s fiancée, will also work alongside them. For the couple, who have two young children, the pizzeria is more than a business.

“It’s about family,” Ondike said. “We’re excited to bring something authentic to the community and do it together.”

La Vera Brooklyn Pizzeria’s hours are expected to be Tuesday through Sunday, with Mondays closed. For updates, follow them on Facebook [1] or Instagram [2].
