March @ the library

a shoebox diorama of peeps depicting a scene from Game of Thrones
In a previous year, Mt. Lebanon Public Information Office created a peeps replica of Game of Thrones.

PEEPS DIORAMA CONTEST What do The Great Gatsby, The Lorax, Frankenstein, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Secret Garden have in common with the Harry Potter and Song of Ice and Fire series? They’ve all been memorialized in dioramas that feature pastel colored baby chickens made of sugar, corn syrup, gelatin and food dye.

The Mt. Lebanon Public Library’s 11th annual Peeps Diorama Contest gives patrons the chance to capture classic scenes from literary works across the ages, provided the main characters are composed of those Easter treats you either love or hate but are guaranteed to knock your glycemic index into next week.

Each diorama must be based on a book or literary theme with characters portrayed by peeps. Dioramas should be shoebox sized. Limit one entry per contestant or group. Enter in one of five categories:  Kids preschool through second grade, kids third through fifth grade, family, teens or adults. Pick up an entry form at the library or download one from mtlebanonlibrary.org, and drop your entries off between March 9 and 15 at the Children’s Desk. Voting runs from March 16 to 22. Winners will be announced the following week.

BODY ART Tattoo artist Shannon Daley will present a couple of programs on tattoos and tattooing, at the library on Tuesday April 7 and 14, from 7 to 8 p.m. Daley has 22 years of experience and will discuss the history of tattooing in art and culture in one program, and conclude the series speaking about modern tattooing and running a tattoo shop.

SEEK SOME KNOWLEDGE If you’re looking to learn something new, a good place to start is somewhere that has a lot of books. In addition to all those volumes, you can learn a thing or two from the library’s programs. Just this month alone, you can immerse yourself in Italian conversation; learn the basics of guitar; sit in on history lectures on Slovak heritage, World War II, early America and local coal mining; learn how to play bridge and pick up the basics of Dungeons and Dragons.

The library also hosts a screenwriting workshop book clubs for lovers of science fiction, mysteries and philosophy. Kids can learn about robotics and other STEAM related stuff, and create things at Matt’s Maker Space.
