The Mt. Lebanon Commission approved funding for this year’s street maintenance and reconstruction program. Street maintenance involves milling pavement and resurfacing streets. Reconstruction requires more work, including replacing deteriorated curbs, rebuilding storm and sanitary sewers and removing the old surface and base.

Mt. Lebanon uses StreetSaver Pavement Management Software to assist the public works department and the municipal engineer to determine which streets are most in need of repair or reconstruction. The software rates each segment of roadway within the municipality with a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) number, based on field inspections to determine the defects within the segment, the composition of the street’s surface, the classification of roadway (collector, local, cul-de-sac or alley) and a known degradation based upon age. Once
the assessments are complete, the municipality allocates funding for the projects.

Niando Construction received the $2,339,538.20 reconstruction contract, and will be working on the following streets:

Street reconstruction is funded through several sources, with $1,664,384 coming from the capital improvements budget, and the remainder from the municipality’s sanitary fund and stormwater fund.

The contractor will leave a notice at your front door a few days before construction begins. You will not be able to park on your street during reconstruction. When you cannot use your street or driveway, you may park during the day and overnight on nearby streets where it is legal. You do not have to contact the police department. The municipality will notify the police department for you.

Emergency fire, police and medical rescue service will continue as usual, as will mail delivery and trash pickup. If your street is closed and you need to pick up or drop off a person with a disability or a medical condition, talk with the contractor’s foreman, who can arrange to have that person transported out of the construction area.

If you are planning to move or are expecting a large delivery during the process, call the municipal engineer at 412-409-2398 as soon as possible. Arrangements will be made if possible; however, you may need to modify your schedule. Let the contractor’s foreman know prior to construction if you have an irrigation system or an invisible dog fence. These systems are not marked on the map, so there is the potential for accidental removal.

Mele & Mele & Sons received the $691,222.50 street maintenance contract, and will be working on the following streets this summer:
