At Sapling & Sons, 690 Washington Road, shopping is more than a routine — it’s a hands-on, sensory experience. Customers don’t just browse; they touch, flip, sniff and combine products to create personalized gifts as they explore the shelves.

Employee Bethany Zulka, who has worked with Sapling Press for over a decade, said the tactile element of the store, which opened in July, is what sets it apart. The result is a personal, engaging shopping experience that feels far removed from the impersonal, mass-produced environment of big-box stores.

“People linger here,” she explained. “They pick up cards, feel the paper, smell the candles and try to find combinations that feel meaningful. That’s the part that really sets this shop apart from big-box stores or online shopping.”

Zulka said shoppers can create complete, thoughtful packages without leaving the store. One visitor recently picked out a card, a candle, a notepad and a few pens, then wrapped everything in the store’s branded tissue paper and black gift bag. “They were able to put together the whole gift in one visit,” she said.

The boutique features letterpress cards from Sapling Press and creations from other independent makers. “The quality is the biggest thing,” Zulka said. “All of our Sapling Press cards are carefully checked, so each one receives a bit of quality control.” She added that the cards have a consistent look across different lines, ensuring a polished, cohesive presentation for customers.

The store also carries a mix of small-batch candles, journals, pens, mugs, tote bags, puzzles and novelty items, all curated to provide options for birthdays, showers, weddings and other celebrations. Many products are sourced from women-owned or small local businesses, giving shoppers a chance to support entrepreneurs while finding unique, high-quality gifts.

Owner Lisa Krowinski, founder of the nationally recognized Sapling Press, emphasized the importance of an in-person shopping experience. “We want people to walk in, slow down and enjoy picking something that feels right for them or the person they’re buying for,” she said.

Krowinski noted that while online shopping is convenient, it can’t replicate the joy of holding a card or a small gift in your hands. “A card with a thoughtful message or a little accompanying gift — that’s something people treasure in a way texts or emails can’t replace,” she said.

Sapling & Sons blends traditional and modern sensibilities. Political and progressive-themed cards featuring socially conscious messaging share space with classic birthday, anniversary and celebration cards.

The store’s compact footprint — about 300 square feet — adds to its charm, offering an intimate browsing experience where customers can take their time exploring each display.

The Uptown location has also drawn praise for its convenience. Shoppers often stop by while running errands or on their way to nearby restaurants.

“People can pop in and find exactly what they need, whether it’s something small they’ve been thinking about for a while or a gift for tonight’s dinner party,” Krowinski said.

Beyond products, Sapling & Sons aims to foster a sense of community. “We really want this to be a place that responds to the community — where people feel heard and inspired,” she said. The shop’s commitment to inclusivity and thoughtful design makes it welcoming for all ages and backgrounds, offering a modern twist on the traditional card-and-gift experience.

The store’s branded black bags and matching tissue paper allow shoppers to create ready-to-gift packages on the spot, which is especially helpful for last-minute occasions. Whether customers are preparing for weddings, graduations or casual celebrations, Sapling & Sons provides everything needed to make a complete, thoughtful gift. Gift bags and tissue paper are also sold for a more personal touch.
