In a joint press release, Roadside Development and Wegmans Food Markets have announced that the regional supermarket chain will anchor a reimagined Galleria of Mt. Lebanon, bringing new life to the longtime retail and community space. The project marks Wegmans’ second location in the Pittsburgh region, with the first in Cranberry Township anticipated to open in fall 2027.

“As we make progress on our first store in the Pittsburgh market in Cranberry Township, we’re thrilled to take another exciting step in the region with the purchase of the Galleria Mall property in Mt. Lebanon,” Dan Aken, Wegmans Vice President of Real Estate and Store Planning said in the release. “We recognize the significance this property holds for the community and see a tremendous opportunity to give it new life…”

In April 2026, Mt. Lebanon Magazine reported on Roadside Development’s purchase of the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon [1]. The acquisition marked an opportunity to enhance the mall while preserving the character and community connections that have made it a familiar destination for generations of shoppers.

For Mt. Lebanon Commercial Districts Manager Eric Milliron, today’s announcement regarding the addition of the approximately 110,000 square foot store represents more than a new shopping option. He sees it as a significant investment in the community and an opportunity to build on what already makes the Galleria a gathering place.

“I could not be more excited,” Milliron said. “Wegmans brings high-quality jobs to our community. They bring a high-quality experience.”

According to Roadside Developments media contact, Katie Smith, “Wegmans stores generally employ between 400 and 500 people. This includes local hiring, as well as current employees who transfer from other Wegmans stores.”

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a regional supermarket chain with 115 stores located along the east coast. A family company operating since 1916, it is known for its wide selection of fresh

produce, prepared foods and specialty items, along with in-store experiences that often include bakery, deli and international food offerings.

Milliron said Wegmans is known for its attention to detail, from how products are presented to the choices available to shoppers. He also noted the company’s reputation as an excellent employer and its potential to attract visitors to the area.

“Who doesn’t love a Wegmans,” said Janie Schraven, Vernon Drive, when she heard the news, adding it will be nice “to see a more eclectic localized grocery store with local in-season food.”

Her mother, Kelly Schraven, said she was unsure how she felt but thought Wegmans could “keep the Galleria moving, alive.”

“From an economic perspective, a business like that draws people to our town,” Milliron said. He explained that visitors coming to shop could also explore local restaurants and retail businesses, making the addition beneficial beyond the grocery store itself.

But the vision for The Galleria extends beyond attracting new shoppers. Milliron emphasized that maintaining the mall’s familiar atmosphere and community connections is an important part of the plans for its future.

“Wegmans and Roadside both are firm believers that the customers are the community, and they want to be a part of that community, and they respect the community’s values and what they’ve become accustomed to,” he said.

Milliron said the development team recognizes the value of the mall’s existing “third place” elements, where people gather outside home and work such as the groups that regularly gather to play mahjong or people who enjoy sitting and having a cup of coffee and talking with friends.

“That was not only something that they want to continue, but something that really excited their team,” Milliron said. “They value that and wish to continue that.”

For Milliron, the decision to bring Wegmans to the Galleria also reflects confidence in Mt. Lebanon and the South Hills.

“It highlights the strength of our market,” he said, noting that Wegmans is selective about where it establishes locations and conducts extensive research before making decisions.

“The best is yet to come,” Milliron said. “In a few years, I think my words will prove to be accurate.”

Renovations are expected to begin in 2028, with other retailers open during the process.
