David Alan Clothing, Pittsburgh’s premier men’s and women’s custom clothier, celebrated its 10th anniversary in style with a party at its flagship location, 620 Washington Road, on Saturday.

“We like this shop the most from an appeal standpoint. It was our first real big brick and mortar, so this will always be our flagship,” Alan pointed out. The Mt. Lebanon store opened two years ago. A Warrendale location followed a year later. Plans are in the works to open stores in Columbus, Ohio, Nashville, Tennessee and Charleston, South Carolina. Three locations in Florida are also under consideration.

Although Alan grew up in Finleyville, he admits Mt. Lebanon has always been one of his favorite shopping districts. “I think the community just nailed it perfectly. Mt. Lebanon has plenty of diversity, plenty of support and a lot of good businesspeople. It’s a great place to be,” he said, thankful for how the other business owners have embraced his store.

David Alan and his team of stylists are sought after by professional athletes, celebrities and business professionals alike.

One of David Alan Clothing’s newest clients is Steelers draft pick and Mt. Lebanon native Eli Heidenreich, who wore a custom suit to this year’s ESPY Awards, the annual ESPN event honoring top athletes, teams and memorable sports moments.

Other celebrities who’ve sported David Alan custom suits and apparel include Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, Pirates rookie Konnor Griffin, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth, former Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier, actor and retired professional wrestler John Cena, and actor and wrestler Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, just to name a few.

Until a mutual friend introduced him to his first celebrity client, WWE superstar Titus O’Neil, Alan was a medical sales rep whose dissatisfaction with suits he bought from New York and Chicago prompted him to start making his own as a side project.

Alan’s goal was always to “do it as big as we could. I didn’t know what that meant at the time, but I knew that if we took the time and did it the right way, we could eventually take it as large as we wanted.”

It turns out, the introduction to O’Neil led to other introductions in the wrestling world. From there, Alan’s custom clothing business was born.

Over the years, Alan’s philanthropy helped the word-of-mouth network grow. When he held his first fashion show in 2016 to raise money for breast cancer awareness, more than 300 people attended. Since then, he’s flown in dozens of celebrities from across the country for fashion shows that benefit a different charity each year. This year’s David Alan Fashion Show is scheduled for September 19 at PPG Place, benefitting Casey’s Clubhouse in Upper St. Clair.

Reflecting on his 10 years in the custom clothing business, Alan said he’s seeing trends change. “I’m starting to see a lot more of a relaxed, casual type look, and men being more comfortable with trying unique things,” he said.

He points out social media may have something to do with that. “I think social media is just making people more comfortable when they see other people doing things, they want to hop on that trend. And I think that’s just human nature.”

David Alan Clothing’s Mt. Lebanon showroom is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
