Fronk returns to coach Blue Devil football

Bruce Fronk was hired as the head football coach at Mt. Lebanon High School in March, and when he met with the team shortly thereafter he told them, ”I left here three years ago, but my heart never left this place.”
Fronk came to the district as a teacher in 2017, and in 2018 then-coach Mike Melnyk brought him on as defensive backs and wide receivers coach. Fronk remained an assistant coach until 2022, when he left to take the defensive coordinator position at South Fayette.
The head coaching slot at Mt. Lebanon became available when Greg Perry resigned at the end of 2025, and when it was offered to Fronk, he said, ”To have the opportunity to come back here and be the head coach was too good to pass up.”
Shortly after his hiring, Fronk began workouts with the team. Along with strength and conditioning programs, he said, ”The biggest thing we’ve been looking at is developing relationships with players and parents and the larger community, getting an intake of who players are, and what their makeup is as a person, a student and an athlete.”
In his preparations, Fronk said he is particularly focusing on how his players deal with adversity.
“When things go well it’s easy to be rah rah rah excited, but when things start going wrong, I’m eager to see how they respond.”
Fronk is currently interim assistant principal at Mellon Middle School, but will be moving to the high school in the fall.
While winning is the goal of every coach, Fronk said winning is a by-product of many other things. ”It’s doing the little things right, like creating a positive culture, a sense of family and accountability, and providing opportunities for players to become better people. If you start putting those things in place, winning takes care of itself.”
