Mt. Lebanon celebrates Earth Month with a pair of signature events, and the kickoff to a season of recycling and other environmentally themed happenings.
On Friday, April 24, the municipality partners with the school district to celebrate Arbor Day and our Tree City USA status with a ceremony at Jefferson Elementary School at 2:30 p.m., featuring a keynote address, music and poetry, culminating with the planting of a tree on school grounds. On Sunday, April 26, LeboGreen, a grassroots environmental organization, will host an Earth Day event in Mt. Lebanon Park from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event features crafts, vendors, music and informational booths. Learn more at mtlebogreen.org/earthday.
The Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy will be holding park improvement work days on April 18, May 3 and May 17, a native plant sale on May 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1240 Washington Road, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information at lebonature.org.
In addition to the celebrations, the Mt. Lebanon Public Works Department will be hosting a monthly series of recycling events through September at the public works facility, 1250 Lindendale Drive.
ELECTRONIC RECYCLING 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One free TV per vehicle. Appliances with refrigerant cost $25. Light bulbs are $2 each. Cash or check only. April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15 and September 19. Mt. Lebanon residents only.
PAPER SHREDDING 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shredding fee is $10 per banker’s box, cash or checks only. April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, August 22 and September 26. Mt. Lebanon residents only.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 11, June 6 and August 8. You must pre-register at nobleenviro.com for the events to minimize wait times and ensure your safety. Rates vary for different materials and are listed on their website. Only credit card payments will be accepted. If you cannot participate in these events, visit prc.org for other events and information.
WOODY WASTE CURBSIDE PICKUP April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12 and October 3. Reservation is required. Call 412-343-3403, between Monday and no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Thursday before pickup, or make an appointment at mylebo.mtlebanon.org. Materials must be on the curb before 7 a.m. on the pickup day.
Follow these guidelines:
Remove all dirt and debris from the roots of shrubs. No soil, rocks, leaves, grass clippings or ornamental grasses.
Place small branches into piles (not bound) not exceeding 24 inches in diameter and 48 inches in length.
Large tree limbs should be no longer than 6 feet in length and no thicker than 5 inches in diameter.
The total amount for any pickup must fit into a single pickup truck, 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet.
YARD WASTE DROPOFF Drop off your yard waste at the golf course maintenance facility on Pine Avenue, on the first Saturday of the month, between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., through October 3, except July 4. Leaves and garden residues in recyclable paper bags, small twigs, shrubs, brush and branches (under 3 feet) are accepted. No grass clippings, stones, soil, stumps, large limbs or plastic bags.
