Public Safety – July/August

TORCH RUN Mt. Lebanon Police Department ran in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Pennsylvania in May. Since 2002, the annual event has raised more than $25 million statewide with nearly 100 participating departments. MLPD is planning to host a Torch Run in Mt. Lebanon this fall. Stay tuned for more details.
CLASSIC CAR SHOW Back for the 29th year on Sunday, July 5, the rain-or-shine event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the 600 and 700 blocks of Washington Road. It’s free, open to the public, and features lots of food, vendors and classy cars. Sponsored by the Mt. Lebanon Police Department, Mt. Lebanon Police Association, Dormont-Mt. Lebanon-Castle Shannon Rotary Club, Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department and Pontiac Oakland Club of Western PA, proceeds from the show benefit police youth programs.
Want to show off your wheels? Register by July 1, for a discounted fee of $10. Registration at the show is $15.
BOOK FIRST RESPONDERS FOR BLOCK PARTIES Usually when EMS shows up at the party, it’s not a good sign — unless you book a visit from them in advance. If you’re hosting a block party this summer, you can have a fire truck, ambulance or police vehicle show up for a hands-on look. It’s a perfect way to get kids familiar and engaged with local first responders. Learn more at mtlebanon.org/block-parties.
MRTSA WEBSITE CHANGE Looking for MRTSA online? Find them at mrtsa.org (used to be mrtsa.com). Staff emails now end in mrtsa.org.
S’MORES SEASON We know it’s prime time for campfires and bonfires, but you should know what you can and can’t burn in your backyard before lighting up.
Outdoor fires greater than three feet in diameter or two feet in height require a permit from both the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department and Allegheny County Health Department.
Chimineas, portable outdoor fireplaces and portable outdoor fire pits must be at least 15 feet away from structures and combustible materials when burning near commercial buildings and apartment buildings with three or more units. For single-family houses or duplexes, we strongly recommend 15 feet as well.
Campfires must be at least 25 feet away from structures and combustible materials. Don’t burn in extremely dry weather or high winds.
SHARE THE ROAD With warmer weather, be prepared to see more motorcyclists and cyclists on the road. Drivers should always provide a three- to four-second following distance, as bikes can stop more quickly than cars. Give cyclists a full lane — never try to pass or share the lane with them.
VACATION CARDS FROM MLPD Going on vacation and want the police to know you’re away from your home? Head to the rear entrance of the Public Safety Building to complete and submit a vacation card. This card should include an emergency person and a phone number to contact in the event of an issue at your residence while you are away.
