Keeping Athletes of All Ages in the Game
From youth leagues to weekend races, sports and physical activity are a part of life for many families across the South Hills. But whether someone is training for a marathon, recovering from an injury, or simply trying to stay active as they age, orthopedic sports medicine plays an important role in helping people move safely and confidently.
At St. Clair Health, patients have access to advanced orthopedic and sports medicine care close to home through St. Clair Medical Group. Among the specialists helping patients regain mobility and return to the activities they enjoy is Dr. Shaka Walker, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.
A former collegiate soccer player at the United States Air Force Academy, Dr. Walker understands firsthand the discipline, teamwork, and physical demands athletics require. Today, he works with athletes of all ages — from high school competitors to adult runners and recreational athletes — treating everything from ACL tears and meniscus injuries to shoulder instability and tendonitis.
“One of the things I enjoy most about sports medicine is helping people get back to the lifestyle they want to have,” Dr. Walker said during a recent episode of the Curating Care podcast. “For younger athletes especially, sports should still be fun.”
That philosophy shapes his approach to care. While surgical expertise is an important part of orthopedic medicine, Dr. Walker emphasizes that most injuries can be treated without surgery through rehabilitation, strength training, conditioning, and coordinated physical therapy.
As a parent of three young athletes, he also believes injury prevention starts long before someone enters an operating room.
“The science supports young athletes playing multiple sports,” Dr. Walker explained. “Different sports teach different movement patterns, coordination, and body awareness. It also helps reduce burnout and overuse injuries.”
As youth sports continue to become more competitive and year-round participation in a single sport becomes the norm, orthopedic specialists are seeing an increase in repetitive stress injuries in younger athletes. Dr. Walker encourages families to focus not only on skill development, but also on overall strength, conditioning, sleep, nutrition, and recovery. Dr. Walker believes that getting the right amount of sleep, in particular, is extremely beneficial for injury prevention. He notes that helping young athletes stay healthy often means teaching them how to properly train, recover, and listen to their bodies before an injury occurs.
For adults, the advice is similar.
“As we get older, we still need to stay active,” he said. “But we also need to take care of our bodies through sleep, nutrition, strength training, and recovery.”
That comprehensive approach is part of what makes the orthopedic program at St. Clair Health unique. The team offers a full spectrum of orthopedic care, including sports medicine, joint replacement, shoulder and hand surgery, foot and ankle care, fracture treatment, and spine surgery. The practice also continues to expand access to advanced technologies and minimally invasive treatments, including diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided injections and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
Recovery is also highly collaborative. Dr. Walker works closely with physical therapists, nurses, and other specialists to help patients safely return to activity. Whether someone is preparing to get back on the field after an ACL injury or hoping to return to everyday exercise without pain, the focus is on creating a personalized plan that supports long-term mobility and function.
Most importantly, Dr. Walker says, patients receive that care in a setting that feels personal and connected to the community.
“At St. Clair, we’re committed to providing advanced orthopedic care close to home while creating an experience where patients feel known, supported, and cared for throughout their recovery in a setting that is personal and community-focused,” he said.
