Love in Lebo

As holiday chaos and excitement fades into the background, we settle into the cozy, snowy days of winter. On the heels of the biggest snowstorm we have seen in 16 years, we could all use an escape from staring at the giant snow piles outside.

Enter…Valentine’s Day. Although I’m not a big Valentine’s Day person, I find that embracing the fun holiday can break up the monotony of winter. Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, I have the whole weekend to celebrate: Friends on Friday, date-night Saturday and family fun day on Sunday.

Sapling & Sons on Washington Road has plenty of offerings to commemorate the big day, from traditional cards to Labubu-themed love notes.

Gone are the days of buying giant over-stuffed teddy bears and heart shaped boxes of truffles for your Valentine. Now, it is all about creating meaningful and lasting experiences together, and lucky for us, Lebo offers plenty of fun ways to celebrate with those you love. So, skip that last minute Trader Joe’s run for flowers and chocolates (well, maybe don’t skip the chocolate) and exchange it for memories with your favorite people. Here are a few of my local favorites that are hosting something special to celebrate.

1930 by Atria’s: A longstanding patron of Atria’s, I have yet to try their newly reimagined concept, 1930 by Atria’s. A menu that boasts of small plates and shareables, it seems to be an ideal spot for a romantic date night. The rotating menu will feature new specials for Valentine’s Day including prime rib, shrimp and mussels, and an antipasto amore (burrata, prosciutto, olives, warm focaccia and Calabrian chili honey). www.1930byatrias.com

Mediterra Café: This local favorite is offering an upscale Valentine’s Day dining experience on Friday, February 13. The carefully selected menu features gnocchi cacio e pepe and cheesecake with blood orange confiture. Plan ahead for this one; tickets are available in advance. www.mediterracafe.com

One of four special Valentine’s Day drink specials now available at Needle & Bean.

Aladdin’s Eatery: This Lebo neighborhood staple is offering its annual Valentine’s Day three-course meal as way to say thank you to our community. Just $15 per guest includes an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert. Options include their award-winning hummus, salad, rolled pita and tasty baklava. I find Aladdin’s to be a great option for those who are searching for vegan or allergy friendly options. www.aladdins.com

Mt. Lebanon Floral: If flowers are on your Valentine’s agenda, why not shop local? The shop is offering artful floral designs with names like “I Got You Babe” and “Succa For You.” You can call or order online at www.mtlebanonfloral.net

Mel’s Petite Café: This Lebo gem is gearing up for Valentine’s Day with some delicious menu specials like the sweet crepe Valentine and the savory La Montagnarde Galette, best enjoyed when paired with their raspberry mocha or rose chai tea. Mel’s dining room is the perfect spot to catch up with your Valentine. Mel’s offers a great selection of gluten-free or vegetarian options. www.melspetitcafe.com

Needle and Bean: This thoughtfully curated space boasts of fair-trade coffee beans and house-made syrups served with food from local favorites, including Balena Bagels and Leona’s ice cream sandwiches. Their Valentine’s Day menu features four specials with Love Potion No. 9 and its vanilla foam and edible glitter topping my list. www.needleandbean.com

No matter how you celebrate, or who you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day with, Lebo has you covered.
