Rear Window: Kevin Scanlon

I had an assignment for Adweek magazine to shoot Billy Bob Thornton in Calgary while he was filming season one of the Fargo anthology. The concept was to shoot him in what seems like an extremely cold environment (it was.) So I used some colored gels to match the concept, but Adweek’s photo director, Margo Didia, suggested a little something more to evoke the feeling. We asked Billy if he’d be opposed to using a cigarette so we could see his breath in the cold air. He obliged, adding something akin to, “Nothing wrong with a photo shoot where I can smoke.” This particular image was an outtake from the shoot.
