Welcome to Mental Health Month!
Every year in May, Mental Health America celebrates Mental Health Month to promote mental wellness nationwide. This annual campaign unites millions of people to spread awareness of mental health topics, share resources, and advocate for the well-being of all.
This year’s theme is “More Good Days, Together.” It’s all about meeting people where they are, supporting them as whole people, and understanding that ‘good’ is defined by their unique experiences and goals. The path may look different for everyone, but we all deserve more good days, together.
Outreach Teen & Family Services is proud to join Mental Health America in this shared goal. As reflected in our agency’s motto — “Counseling. Care. Connection.” — we recognize the importance of community and the power of positive relationships to
help individuals build self-confidence and feel empowered to take control of their mental health.
One of the ways we do this is through the Outreach College Crew (OCC), a peer-to-peer resource for young adults to use their voices in broadening Outreach’s mission across the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Now in its fifth year, the goal of the OCC is to give every young adult an opportunity to be heard and to thrive. Members help spread awareness about mental health by hosting special events for their peers, advocating for mental wellness education and resources, and hosting Outreach’s monthly podcast, Teens Tap In.
“Spreading accurate information about mental health can help reduce stigma around it,” explains Rhianna Vranka, President, OCC. “Through our podcast, we discuss important mental health topics and help others realize it’s okay to talk about mental health and reach out if they need help.”
Fellow OCC member and podcast co-host Faith Healy shares a similar sentiment: “The advice I would give a peer struggling with mental health related problems is to identify the safe people in their life and to not be afraid to ask them for help. Mental health treatment doesn’t just start in an office, but rather at home and with the people in our lives.”
The OCC is a great opportunity for emerging professionals and any young adult who is looking to make a difference in their local community. Members within the group often find themselves just as impacted by their own work as people are outside of it.
“I have had moments of empowerment by sharing my stories and thoughts on topics that I am passionate about,” says Isabelle Vicari, co-event coordinator, OCC. “Through these conversations, we’re able to support one another, as well as leave an impact on the community that tunes into the podcast.”
If you — or someone you know — is between the ages of 18-25 and passionate about mental health, we encourage you to apply for the upcoming cycle of the OCC. Applications will be accepted until May 29, 2026. To express your interest in applying, please email Outreach’s clinical program director and OCC advisor, Maggie Zangara (mzangara@outreachteen.org).
