St. Clair Checkup
For mothers, breastfeeding is often portrayed as a natural and instinctive process—yet the reality can be far more complex. From latch issues and milk supply concerns, to navigating work schedules and societal pressures, many mothers can face challenges that make breastfeeding feel overwhelming. This is where lactation consultation and resources become invaluable.
In addition to the on-site Lactation Center managed by a certified lactation consultant at the Family Birth Center, St. Clair Health now offers additional breastfeeding support with the only dual board-certified OB/GYN physician and lactation consultant in Western Pennsylvania.
As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Jourdan E. Schmitz, MD, of St. Clair Medical Group OB/GYN, provides comprehensive lactation support that empowers mothers to meet their breastfeeding goals. She focuses on breastfeeding fundamentals, as well as medication and supplement guidance, while helping fellow mothers overcome challenges such as milk production issues, breast and nipple pain, and difficulties with pumping.
“Pittsburgh is really fortunate to be rich in lactation-related resources in general, including other amazing IBCLCs that are here,” she states. “But, a lot of the care that was previously available was very pediatric and infant focused. So, as the only board certified OB/GYN in the Pittsburgh area who is also an IBCLC, I think that brings a new element to the table.”
While many lactation consultants can offer basic breastfeeding and lactation support, they cannot diagnose conditions, order tests, prescribe medications, or perform procedures. Dr. Schmitz helps bridge this gap by delivering a higher level of physician-directed care when medical intervention is needed.
When patients come to Dr. Schmitz for lactation care, she begins with a comprehensive medical, surgical, and feeding history, along with a physical exam. Many are referred by local physicians or lactation consultants, so she also assesses their previous support and challenges. From there, Dr. Schmitz collaborates with patients to define and achieve their breastfeeding goals.
The care provided by Dr. Schmitz is integrated into her regular OB/GYN practice, meaning that patients can receive lactation support alongside their general obstetric care. This holistic approach makes it easier for mothers to access the care they need in a convenient, compassionate setting.
“Our staff knows this is often a time sensitive situation. They work really hard to get patients in to see me in a timely fashion, and I work really hard to help make that happen,” she assures. “I also work on the inpatient side of things, seeing new parents who are just starting their breastfeeding journeys when I’m rounding in the hospital as well.”
For those who choose to breastfeed, Dr. Schmitz wants them to know that challenges are common—but you don’t have to face them alone. Whether you need help overcoming any difficulties or simply seeking advice, Dr. Schmitz’s personalized care can make a world of difference in your breastfeeding journey.
“I think my greatest message is that breastfeeding, while it might seem like a natural process, is often one that doesn’t come easily to people. Fortunately, there is growing interest in our field and more evidence is coming out about how to offer support,” she shares. “There are people here who are experts, who are right around the corner, and we’re currently accepting new patients.”
